10 Year Anniversary of the Dr. Reuben Mason Medicinal Garden
Clean-up & Revitalization Days
Saturday, April 30, 2022 & Wednesday, May 4, 2022
9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon

Yes, the garden has now reached its 10th birthday and there will be lots to learn and do. On Saturday we will start with our town historian, Edna Kent, giving a walk-through lecture of the doctor’s now beautifully restored house, explaining all its intimate details and significance to our town. We will follow that with a talkwhile  gathered around our beautiful Valley Forge Elm tree that we all planted on that inspirational day back inSeptember  2014. If you were there you will be amazed on how well it has done. We will also have a discussion on Dutch Elm disease and its effect on our town and so many others across America.

We will continue on with a hands on pruning class on the fruit trees we planted a few years back. For those interested in participating, bring your pruners. We also have other woody plants that need attention. And, of course, we will start the cleaning up of the gardens. What we can’t finish, we will tackle again on the following Wednesday.

Let’s continue to make history!!!

If rain dates are needed, we will post them here.

Valley Forge Elm Tree Lecture & Planting
September 2014

A collaboration with the Glocester land trust and with a lectured ceremony planted a disease resistant Valley Forge Elm tree in the exact spot an elm grew 200 years ago, we learned from photos from the 1880’s showing an already 100 year old tree.  It turned out this tree had been grown by a master gardener. There were two trees left over that ended up at the Chepachet free Will Baptist Church also replacing one’s destroyed by the Dutch elm disease. These are watched over by neighbors and the church members.  This effort alone was an incredible example of how we have the ability to make right what went wrong so long ago.
